Veliko Tarnovo lies in the centre of Northern Bulgaria between Sofia and Varna. It is the old capital of Bulgaria and was the centre of the second Bulgarian kingdom in the middle ages. The town is perched on the side of hills overlooking the valley of the river Yantra. With pretty cobbled streets traversing the town one can get spectacular views in every direction; down to the river, across to the university, the monument to the brothers Assen, and Tsaravets, an immense series of fortifications dominating one end of the town and the host of the famous and unique light show which is staged at regular intervals throughout the year. There are; museums, churches, a cathedral, national revival style houses, charming shops and restaurants, whilst further afield lies the village of Arbanasi, the roman town of Nicopolis, and several spectacular and historic monasteries.
