Krumovgrad lies about 40km to the southeast of the town of Kurzhdali. It is situated on the right bank of the Krumovitsa river. Just outside the present-day town, archeologists have found remains of a fortress and a church, dating to the Middle Ages. The natural surroundings of Krumovgrad are quite impressive and have unexploited potential for tourism development. One of the most beautiful natural sights in Bulgaria is the Arda river’s gorge near the miners’ town of Madzharovo. The gorge’ view can be enjoyed if one takes the northern offroad that starts from the highest point of the Krumovgrad-Ivailovgrad main road. Further down the main road to Ivailovgrad, there is another offroad to the village of Plevun. In its neighbourhood archeologists have found remains of Thracian settlements and a Thracian sanctuary. The sanctuary is situated close to the peak of St Iliya and keeps a ritual plate with a Thracian horseman depicted on it. In the area surrounding the village of Studen Kladenets, naturelovers can visit the Vulchi Dol natural reserve, which is home to rare species of vultures. International hunting tourism is also well developed in the region of Krumovgrad with seven hunting fields operational here.
