Berkovitsa. The town has 370 km of altitude and is situated in the western part of the Balkan Mountains, 23 km south of Montana, 52 km west of Vratsa and 85 km north of Sofia. Its population is about 17 000 people. In the surrounding areas is located a hill called Kaleto where archeologists found remains of a fortress and a church, proving that there had been a settlement in that area already in IV century. During the Vidin’s kingdom in the second half of the XIV century there was a boundary fortress. Later, during the Bulgarian Revival period the town advanced because of the flourishment of different crafts.
