The town of Batak (4488 inhibitants, 1036 meters above sea level) is situated in the Western Rhodopes. It is situated at the distance of 36km from Pazardjik, at the distance of 16 km south of Peshtera, at the distance of 26 km from Velingrad, 51km from Dospat, as well as at the distance of 156 km south-east of Sofia. The name of this town is mostly associated with the April Uprising in 1876, an event of eminent historical importance. It is surrounded by many peaks, clad with century-old pine and spruce forests. The climate is temperate continental with a characteristic southern warm wind.
